The
term “ Paying your dues” took on a new meaning when this man came
along. D. Royce Baird has seen 40 years of music history pass before
his very eyes... from the hallowed halls of the recording studios
to sleeping in the backstreets and alleys of Nashville , Tn. The
phrase “Been there....Done it!” are a familiar sound in this camp.
If you are looking for total entertainment .....then you've come
to the right place. Church and school functions were both early
outlets for his burning desire to create music. At age seven the
young musician began taking piano lessons for four years until making
the change to guitar and vocals. Songwriting would become a natural
addition to his many talents. To date, D. Royce Baird has released
five albums with record sales in excess of 2.5 million. His most
recent release," From The Barroom...To The Cross” is most definitely
destined to break those records.
When
asked who were his early influences, D. Royce will tell you there
are too many to count, but when forced to narrow it down, he'll
say with a smile," Mamma and Hank Williams... My Mother was
in her late stages of pregnancy, with me, when she attended a concert
and watched Hank and his Drifting Cowboy Band perform six encores
of “Lovesick Blues” to a soldout crowd at the Louisiana Hayride.
I was hooked from that point on”. A
move from Texas to Nashville were sure to happen for the budding
singer/ songwriter. Once established in Tennessee his dreams of
becoming a national recording artist were realized after meeting
veteran producer Wayne Hodge, president of Stargem Records. After
a series of single releases on that label, then the largest independent
label in Nashville, D. Royce moved on to form his on record label/publishing
company and recording studio. This move would prove to be the door
to stardom and the birth of “Jake Brake and The All Trucker Band”,
a renegade outlaw band that featured “Blue” comedy songs for truckers.
Even after reaching double platinum status in record sales, Baird
recalls with remorse," I was never proud of this era in my
career. I changed my name to Jake Brake just so my parents wouldn't
know what I was doing. What good is money and fame if you can't
hold your head up with pride”. A lengthy legal battle over the name
“Jake Brake” would soon lead him to destitution and force him to
return to his roots, his real name and the brand of music you hear
today. D. Royce calls it “Tailgate Gospel”. Put it in your stereo...crank
up the volume...and rip the knob off!
D.
Royce Baird once again resides in the sleepy little East Texas town
of Atlanta/Queen City but considers his home away from home to be
Norway . Baird fell in love with the country and people during his
first of seven world tours. The island nation of Cyprus also ranks
high on his list.
The
experience of watching D.Royce Baird and band on stage is to witness
a total love for their craft. If you want cutting edge entertainment.........You
found it!
